Between Us

I’m so grateful for the group of Fellowship folks who are presenting the Sunday service this week, “Imagine Peace.” Bill Glassmire gave us the starting point with his questions: “What does PEACE mean to you? no war? good relations with your neighbors? a life with enough for everyone?” It’s easy to think that peace, or perhaps world peace, is too much to aim for, too hard to even imagine. Yet we know, we do know, that we either create more peace or create obstacles to peace with every action, every step we take.

Let’s not let our imaginations wither, for if we cannot imagine peace we cannot help create it. How DO you imagine peace? practicing humility? practicing forgiveness? being other-centered?outgrowing a need to be right? being less afraid? sharing space, sharing homes, sharing money? remembering that people are more important than things, that animals are as important as people? learning to center yourself in the breath which is given each moment? Was there ever a better time than now to give our attention to creating peace? Thank-you to all of you who are joining in this conversation.

Sip & Snack Sunday, 7/14

Are you ready for some boche ball at CARDWELL HILLS CELLARS for wine tasting with fellow UU’s? Hope so. We’ll meet in the UU parking lot on Sunday July 14 at 11:45.

The Cellar is an easy 25-minute drive away. Bring finger-food snacks to share with the group as we enjoy a glass of wine and get to know one another! If you are a wine passport holder, this is a BOGO event (half off). It’s predicted to be sunny and will be toasty by 3 p.m. so bring a water bottle. They have a lovely, wide porch.

We will leave the UUFC after the service; you might consider carpooling.

RSVP to Heather so she can alert the Cellar of our numbers. Heather will send participants a confirmation email on Saturday.

Board of Directors Report for June 18

The June Board of Directors meeting started with a mouthwatering potluck to welcome next year’s board, and we were joined by Skyla King-Christison and Russ Karow. Skyla reported that the children and youth Religious Exploration programs are seeing some definite recovery from pandemic lows. Adult RE plans are in development. There will be interesting and meaningful opportunities for all. Russ presented a revised draft of the Endowment Fund Policy. Money in our endowment fund may not be spent, and the interest will be used for the long-term benefit of the Fellowship. We discussed details of fund management and interest distribution and will see a final draft of the policy in July. We also discussed a draft fundraising policy, aimed at clarifying how we manage our fundraising events. The Board looks forward to more fun(d) discussions in the future.

“Imagine Peace” 7/14/24

What does PEACE mean to you? no war? Good relations with your neighbors? a life with enough for everyone? Join us as several Fellowship members, including Bill Glassmire, Molly Curry and Joyce Federiuk, share their understandings of peace and why we need to give more attention to it. Rev. Monica Jacobson Tennessen joins us to host the service.

Sign Up For Music Sharing Night, 8/7

Music Sharing Night is coming up! Bring your instruments and your voices to share music with the community, open-mic style. All musical acts are encouraged to participate. In the past we’ve had performers of all ages share a variety of styles and genres of music. You don’t have to be a professional musician. In fact, we’ve had people make their performance debut right here at UUFC. Perform as a solo act, or form a group. Original music is welcome and encouraged. Each act will have 10 minutes to perform.

To sign up, please fill out a form:

Classroom Wing Renovation Progress Update

The architect and engineers have told us that they would have permit-ready plans by July 15th. At that point the plans will be sent to the City of Corvallis Building Dept. for review, which takes 3-4 weeks. Simultaneously the plans will be sent to our contractor, Gerding Construction Co., where they will begin their subcontractor bidding, planning and scheduling process. If all goes well construction may start sometime in September. Meanwhile UU volunteers will be cleaning out the classroom wing in preparation for demolition and construction. We hope to have all items removed from the construction area by end of July. Then we will begin our own efforts at demolition work with completion of that work by the end of August.

How can you help? Here is a preliminary list of needs: We need sturdy boxes or reusable plastic bins to store books and other items. They can be left outside the foyer doors near the bench.

We need storage space in garages, basements or spare rooms (contact Jill) We need volunteers for packing, storage and demolition. Later we will need volunteers for painting and moving everything back in. Wolfgang Dengler will have volunteer signup sheets available soon.

We do not yet know how long the construction process will be but the building facilities team will provide regular schedule updates throughout the process.

Thank you for your patience,

Brian Egan
