RE Podcasts

Explore. Love. Act.

Our physical building may be closed, but the church is not! During this time of social distancing, we have created Religious Exploration (RE) opportunities for staying connected. One of these opportunities is our RE Podcast! This page lists our RE podcasts for your listening enjoyment. These stories and activities are meant for ALL ages. Enjoy!

"Living the Stories - The Creature in the Room"

Today’s story is about change. Change can be very scary, especially when it makes us move from someplace comfortable to someplace unknown. But sometimes that’s the only way we can stretch our wings!

After you listen to the story, you can make a hatching bird of your own with its parents. The birds in the instructions are penguins, but you can make whatever kind of bird you like!

"Living the Stories - When the night grew jealous of the day"

As we move into the season of winter, the nights grow longer and longer. In today’s story, the Night becomes jealous of how much humans prefer the Day, even though the world needs both for true balance.

After you listen to the story, you can make your own card that shows the way that the dark and the light balance one another.

"Living the Stories - The Grumpy Gecko"

This week, we’re exploring and celebrating the ways in which we are all connected. Sometimes something that seems like an inconvenient problem can be recontextualized when we know the big picture. That’s what happens to this grumpy gecko! Let’s listen.

After you listen to the story, you can make your own grumpy gecko. Instructions can be found here.

"The Water-Bearer's Garden"

We can’t always see the effects of our own actions. Sometimes we find out that something we didn’t think was a big deal was actually having huge repercussions on the world around us. That’s what happens in today’s story — give it a listen!

After you’ve heard the story, you can grab some stuff from the recycling bin and make something similar to the pots the Water-Bearer used. These are a lot smaller, and they’re made of plastic rather than clay, but it’s the same idea!

October 17, 2021 - Time For All Ages Podcast and Activity - "Kindness and the Beast"

In today's story, a terrible beast lives in the center of the forest...maybe? Let's challenge our assumptions about an old story and learn about how kindness can help heal old wounds and unhappy memories.

After you listen to the story, you can make your own paper rose to remind you how helpful it can be to be kind. Also paper roses are so pretty! Learn how here: https://www.instructables.com/Kindness-Rose/

Time For All Ages – Land Acknowledgement

To learn about to original stewards of the land on which you stand or have stood on in the past, you can go here and enter any address: https://native-land.ca/

We can’t go on field trips right now for school or church, but there are some virtual tours you can take to learn more about the tribal nations of Oregon while staying safe at home.

The Chachalu Museum and Cultural Center has a virtual museum tour, which you can access here: http://ikanum.grandronde.org/

It uses photos and text to explore the history of the Confederated Tribes, and you can click on things with your mouse to learn more. It’s got a lot of text, so it will be more enjoyable for grown-ups and older kids, but I bet it would be a lot of fun to let a kiddo do the clicking and a grown-up or older sibling do the reading.

You can also virtually explore the grounds and facilities of the Confederated Tribes of the Grande Ronde here: https://roundme.com/tour/433498

This is a lot of fun because you can just click on different places and look around in 360 degrees. The buildings and the grounds are beautiful and it’s really neat to explore.

Let’s do some learning for Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Monday, October 11th!

"The People of Lake Namun" Time for All Ages Story and Activity "The People of Lake Namun"

In today’s story, the children of Lake Namun honor and restore a lake by discovering and drawing spiral patterns. This practice inspires the community to come together! Let’s listen.

Story from: “The People of Lake Namun: A Story of Community,” by Annie Bryan (https://www.talesandsongs.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/The-People-of-Lake-Namun-A-Story-of-Community.pdf)

After you listen to the story, you can inspire and make people smile by going on an adventure to make spirals and leave them around for people to find! It’s easy, and best of all, it’s a way to bring joy without having to make actual contact with people. Social distancing!

"The Miracle Workers"

The religious life is a shared experience between all who engage in it. In today’s story, Jesus of Nazareth points out to his disciples that not everything requires a heavenly miracle – some things work better with a little human ingenuity. Take a listen:

After you listen, you’ll find that the disciples figure out how to multiply the loaves and fishes all by themselves. Now you can, too, with a silly, simple craft activity.
