It’s February, which means it’s Black History Month, a time to honor and learn about Black American history and culture. Each of this month’s Sunday stories will explore the history of a different Black American, and today’s story is about John Cashin, a Unitarian Universalist and the founder of a political party called the National Democratic Party of Alabama that advanced the civil rights and voting power of Black Americans in the 1960s and 70s.
Although John Cashin died in 2011, we do have some archival footage of him talking about his life and work. You can watch two for free here:
The story of the Black American struggle for voting rights and equal representation is so much bigger than John Cashin’s efforts in Alabama. Black History in Two Minutes (or Less) has a great little video about Reconstruction, the period in the South after the Civil War in which Black Americans participated in our government until Jim Crow laws pushed them out.
If you’d like to watch more tiny documentaries about Black history with your family, there’s a whole archive covering all kinds of aspects! You can scroll down and see what looks interesting.

It’s also a time during which new lambs are born. Lambs and sheep are often seen as a symbol of spring for this reason.

“The Water-Bearer’s Garden”
We can’t always see the effects of our own actions. Sometimes we find out that something we didn’t think was a big deal was actually having huge repercussions on the world around us. That’s what happens in today’s story — give it a listen!
After you’ve heard the story, you can grab some stuff from the recycling bin and make something similar to the pots the Water-Bearer used. These are a lot smaller, and they’re made of plastic rather than clay, but it’s the same idea!

October 17, 2021 – Time For All Ages Podcast and Activity – “Kindness and the Beast”
In today’s story, a terrible beast lives in the center of the forest…maybe? Let’s challenge our assumptions about an old story and learn about how kindness can help heal old wounds and unhappy memories.
After you listen to the story, you can make your own paper rose to remind you how helpful it can be to be kind. Also paper roses are so pretty! Learn how here: https://www.instructables.com/

Time For All Ages – Land Acknowledgement
To learn about to original stewards of the land on which you stand or have stood on in the past, you can go here and enter any address: https://native-land.ca/
We can’t go on field trips right now for school or church, but there are some virtual tours you can take to learn more about the tribal nations of Oregon while staying safe at home.
The Chachalu Museum and Cultural Center has a virtual museum tour, which you can access here: http://ikanum.grandronde.org/
It uses photos and text to explore the history of the Confederated Tribes, and you can click on things with your mouse to learn more. It’s got a lot of text, so it will be more enjoyable for grown-ups and older kids, but I bet it would be a lot of fun to let a kiddo do the clicking and a grown-up or older sibling do the reading.
You can also virtually explore the grounds and facilities of the Confederated Tribes of the Grande Ronde here: https://roundme.com/tour/
This is a lot of fun because you can just click on different places and look around in 360 degrees. The buildings and the grounds are beautiful and it’s really neat to explore.
Let’s do some learning for Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Monday, October 11th!

“The Miracle Workers”
The religious life is a shared experience between all who engage in it. In today’s story, Jesus of Nazareth points out to his disciples that not everything requires a heavenly miracle – some things work better with a little human ingenuity. Take a listen:
After you listen, you’ll find that the disciples figure out how to multiply the loaves and fishes all by themselves. Now you can, too, with a silly, simple craft activity.
